The Causes!

So why does your vagina smell like a freshly cut onion? Who knows! From what I've researched, it looks like it could be caused by a whole bunch of things, which probably explains why it's so hard to treat. Here are some potential causes:

It could be...
• What you eat: You may have an uncommon genetic deficiency where you lack certain enzymes that break down metabolic by-products in certain foods
• Candida in the gut - also called leaky gut syndrome
• H pylori - bacteria in your stomach.
• Constipation
• You recently touched a cut onion ( a lot of girls say touching onions causes the smell)
• Anxiety (not a cause for odor, but certainly a trigger)
• Tonsil stones - apparently, even tonsil stones can cause onion body odor
• The relationship between the bacteria that lives on your skin and your apocrine glands
• Bacterial Vaginosis
• Circulating androgens (no idea what they are, but I found a site that said these cause onion odor)
• The Pill
• Diabetes
• Staph Hominis (known for their oniony smell) which override the non-odorous strains of Staph we have naturally on our skin.
• How your body reacts when you ovulate
• Chemical sensitivities to the soaps you use
• An auto-immune system problem
• That you were over-treated with antibiotics for a prolonged period of time
• A reaction to certain synthetic fabrics
• Coffee, tea, or soda with caffeine
• Alcohol
• Smoking
• Refined sugars like white sugar and processed sugars like High Fructose Corn Syrup
• An STD
• An infection of some kind, like a UTI or yeast infection
• Red meat and fish
• Your vagina might be haunted by the ghosts of onions
and
• Zinc and Folic Acid Vitamin deficiencies

Those seem to be the most common causes (accept for the ghosts. That's rare.)

  1. I don't experience the smell, but certainly the aftertaste in both my boobs and vag area... and for me it's not the pill, because I have been suffering from this since my first encounter with a boy, at which time I was not on the pill, nor had I ever been on it. I find that if I stop eating onions, garlic and red meats, there is no aftertaste. But those are sooo hard to avoid. I will def try the choroxygen pills. In all my years of research, am I glad I found this website. Thank you so much!!!!

    1. I agree. I can't cut those foods out either. Give the Chlorophyll a try, and something worth trying on your boobs is Certain Dri... Jut apply it for 3-4 days straight, then apply every 3 days. Do it at bedtime before you go to sleep. It's helped a lot of girls with that issue ;)
      Best of luck, sweetheart!

    2. It's me again! It's been about 2 weeks since I started taking the chloroxygen gel pills and the aftertaste is completely gone even though I haven't been watching what I eat. So even though I've been eating onions, I seem to have gotten rid of this problem.... I just wanted to say thank you soooo much!!

    1. I've heard that from a few other girls. It's the darndest thing. I can't imagine why that would happen, but something worth trying, if it's enough of a pain for you, is try taking chlorophyll daily, and see if you still have your issue. Best of luck, honey!

    2. I am newly diabetic (a month or so). Did a ton of cooking on the 24th, including cutting onions- but I didn't eat anything with the onions. At first I thought it was just my hands still smelling, despite numerous washes and using stainless steel. But realized today, everything smells like onions, most especially my "cash and prizes." Will be trying things from your solutions list, and thank you so much for this site!

  4. I too have this onion problem. My vagina really smells like onion and has a sour taste. And sometimes i have pain on my lower left side of the stomach. Actually what is this chlorophyll thing!?? And how does it works!??
Is the light pain normal or do i have to see a doctor!?? Help please!! :)

    1. I'm not sure about your pain, hon. That may be unrelated to an onion odor issue. I would get that checked by a doctor. But Chlorophyll is the pigment in many green vegetables that is HIGHLY nutrient rich. It provides (among a number of health benefits) a powerful internal deodorizer effect that fights body odors.
If you haven't already, check out my page on how I used chlorophyll to fight my odor on this page:

    1. Well, the only way to know for sure is if you take a visit to your doctor. If you're infection-free, you may simply have this onion-odor issue like the rest of us ladies. I often have the odor right before my period, so it's possible that your issue is hormone related... However, the only way to know for sure is to have your doctor take some tests. If they're all negative, take a look at my solutions page, and hopefully you'll find one that works for you!
      Best of luck, sweetheart!

  6. I have another cause that is not listed on your website: Constipation! If you are constipated or someone who struggles with chronic constipation, your body is definitely going to be secreting some odors. It only makes sense right? If you are not eliminating your waste efficiently...well...you're going to smell like it. I honestly never put two and two together until I did a colon cleanse and noticed that I had NO vaginal odor whereas before I always had SOME kind of odor down there. Never onion but different variations of unpleasant or just pungent. And not only after doing a cleanse did the odor disappear but my vagina smelled surprisingly pleasant! The two colon cleanses I have tried are Colonix and Colonetix. Colonetix is a little easier because it's just pills you take a couple of times a day. And they are full of herbs, some of which may be similar to the supplements that you have recommended. Colonix is more intense and involves drinking a lot of water and a tea, powdered fiber etc. I only recommend that one if you are really going to be committed to following all those steps. I'm sure there are other great colon cleanse products out there too, those are just the ones I have tried. I believe the Colonetix also made more of a difference with odors for me too. My armpits even smelled good and I didn't even need to use deodorant for a while! And I've ALWAYS had stinky pits! So that was awesome. Now obviously....colon cleanses are a temporary cleanse that you can't stay on forever but after doing one...or even if you don't want to do an actual cleanse but you suffer from constipation, just make sure you are getting enough fiber & water regularly to keep things running smoothly on a regular basis and this will make a difference too. And also it's just good for your overall health! Hope this helps someone out there! Oh And about the circulating androgens: that's too much male hormones and also causes hirsutism, which is male pattern body hair on women, which I also suffer from (as if stinky onion nipples weren't enough). I recently read that drinking spearmint tea twice a day helps to eliminate excess hormones and has been scientifically proven as effective to improve hirsutism. So I'm guessing it will help with BO too if it is eliminating those excess hormones. I'll be giving it a shot for sure! Hope someone finds this helpful! ;)

  7. This oniony smell thing is just crazy! I have battled it nearly all my life (post puberty). I'm beginning to realize that it comes about 5 or so days before the onset of my period. One frustrating thing is that I'm a breastfeeding mom, and I notice that the oniony smell transfers to my little girls mouth. It's so embarrassing :( I HATE THIS!
The whole constipation/colon cleanse thing mentioned by a previous post makes a lot of sense to me, as this is something I have also battled much of my life. Hmmm?? I may give cleansing a shot, after I wean my little one though. Thanks for this site!

    1. Sorry to hear that, hon. After that last comment, I've also started experimenting with constipation relief options to see if there's a connection for me. Perhaps, ask your doctor if Chlorophyll supplements are safe while breast feeding. I've researched it, but results are mirky on the subject throughout the inter webs. But also check my "More Solutions" page to see if there is another way to treat your condition until you hear from your doctor. Best of luck, mama!

    2. I have the same issue! I also used the clinical deodorant. It has its cons and its pros. Is does eliminate the smell, which is what we all want. The issue is, it simply covers it up. It's not actually resolving the issue. Once you stop using the deodorant, it will smell even worse than before. Your body will depend on the deodorant and you will actually need it. It will work the same way as your under your arms.

    1. Hello sweetheart. It's so strange isn't it. It's reasons like this that I'm sure it's so hard for any doctor to pinpoint a cause for this condition. I hear a new one almost every month. Even though its tricky to know the exact cause, hopefully the Chlorophyll will help you. Just remember - take it once in the morning and once at night, and if the smell continues, try taking it 3 times a day - one with breakfast, lunch and dinner. 10. Has anyone had onion taste down there & on your nipples? If so, have the solutions worked? My boyfriend says that I have an onion taste and honestly, I do notice an onion smell here and there. I have had reoccurring BV. I do not know if I have it again right now...but I honestly do not feel like antibiotics work. If it worked, why does it keep on coming back? Also, will greek yogurt work? Please help. My boyfriend and I hardly have any intimacy because the taste is too strong for him. I really want things to work out with him. This whole onion taste/smell is depressing.

    1. Hello Kitten. A lot of girls say they have the onion issue on their nipples as well! Apart from taking Chlorophyll twice a day, try using Certian Dri on your nipples at night before you go to sleep. Do this every night for a week, and see if you notice a difference - if so, you can continue doing it every 3 nights or so. It lasts 72 hours, but the first week you use it, you'll want to use it every night. In regards to the BV, I would highly suggest taking Rephresh Pro-B Probiotic Feminine Supplements. I use it myself, and a number of other gals in my comments say it's helped them immeasurably with their reoccurring BV. Anti-biotics can tend to cause a lot more trouble than they help. They can make your bacterial flora overgrow and become resistant to future treatments. taking a pro-biotic on a regular basis is a good way to keep your flora in check. Definitely give it a try. 13. Hi. I've also had the onion smell since I was a teenager. It was worse when I would sweat. What helped me feel fresh all day was shaving and then washing my vag and butt with a mixture of water with vinegar, baking soda or lemon/lime juice. What you do is grab a plastic measuring cup, plastic cup or whatever you have on hand and fill it up with warm water and then add a splash of white vinegar or a big pinch of baking soda or the juice from a half of a slice of lemon/lime. Mix it and then wash your areas well. Rinse with warm water. Pat dry and done. I have also tried rubbing my areas with a half of a slice of lemon/lime and then rinse with warm water. I try to limit washing with vinegar about 1-2 times a week because it's too acidic for my hooha but I do cleanse daily with the baking soda and water mixture. The only time I smell a little bit of the onion is when my husband goes down on me so I need to fix that. I'm going to try your suggestions. Thank you so much and I hope my info helps you ladies :)

  16. Hello ladies, well I'm 31 and can only think of 2 or 3 times I have noticed the onion smell during sex. This is over the past couple of years. I figured it was due to cutting up onions. Anyway I'm off the pill now and I'm quite horny so pleasured myself and noticed that the smell was my discharge! Wuh wtf? I'm due on next week no doubt but just wanted to point out it's not the pill. 1. Well - I've been taking Chlorophyll for about 3 years now, and if I go a few days without it, the onions come right back. I don't think it's a cure. It's a treatment, so unfortunately it is something, I know for myself, that I'll just have to keep taking. I think of it mostly as I do deodorant. I have a strong onion smell AND I'm suppppeeerrrrr sour tasting. It's so embarrassing, like I literally cry sometimes becuase of the smell and taste. I can't even wear or skirt or open my legs without being self conscious about it. I'm also taking adicphilous w/ 3 billion cultures but I don't think it's working. I'm 20 years old and still a virgin. Sometimes I get super thick mucus too, sometimes it smells like onions and sometimes it doesn't, but it always smells sour or salty and i dont know what to do . 1. I'm so sorry to hear that sweetheart. Boy - I used to never wear skirts for the same reason. You're not alone, kitten. Hummm... A few things: if you've been taking the Chlorophyll twice a day (once at night and once in the morning) every day for at least 2 weeks, and you don't notice a difference, there are a few things to try. Try using Certain Dri or Lavilin deodorant on your lady parts. Certain Dri is more abrasive, but it worked wonders for me. Another one of my readers suggested Lavilin because it's more natural. Also take a look at my "More Solutions" page, and give some of those a try.
Also, for the "sour" issue you mention - not sure what can cause this, but it may be yeast-related. Not an infection - just perhaps your flora is a bit too acidic. Try taking a 20 minute bath with a cup of baking soda a few times a week. Hopefully that will help. Best of luck, sweetie!

  19. I just bought multivitamins and the liquid chlorophyll at 100 mg. 2 TBS are recommended on the bottle. I couldn't find anything higher than that. Do you think that amount is okay? Should I up the dosage? It's absolutely awful having the case of the onions. I hope it goes away. I don't have the smell, but I can taste it on my partners breath whenever we are in the moment. The taste is coming from down there and on my breasts... it's just so embarrassing. I feel so self conscious! But I'm grateful I found this page. I'm not the only onion in the world. :') Thank you a million times.

    1. Hello! Sorry for the late reply. I would just follow the instructions on the bottle, and see how it works for you. If it doesn't seem to be working so well, try taking another table spoon at night. That's what I did when I was taking the liquid before starting the pills. Very best of luck, sweetheart!

  20. You said that one of the causes is tonsil stones. Recently I've been getting tonsil stones, bad BO and my breasts have been sore and I have been slightly nauseaus (just an overall uncomfortable sensation in my body, not like I'm going to throw up)...are all of those symptoms related? I also know I am HSV1 positive if that helps too.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Unfortunately, I can't speak to your symptoms - It sounds like you may have an illness that needs to be discussed with a doctor. If you're breasts are sore, the odor may be connected to a hormonal issue, but I would definitely see a doctor to make sure you're not ill. In the mean time, perhaps give Certain Dri a try. Apply it to your breasts every day for 5 days, then just every 3 days or so... But see a doctor, for sure to discover if all of your symptoms are connected. Best of luck, lady!

  21. Thank you so much for this article! I've been dealing with this problem for about a year now and at first I blamed the smell on my bf since he's a chef and works with onions all day but then I noticed...IT'S ME! I'll be purchasing some chlorophyll pills very soon but I have a question, I've been looking online for them and I've come across 100mg pills and I was wondering if that's too much to take? Should I just stick to the 50mg pills? Thank you!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Personally, I've noticed that the brand of chlorophyll is more important than the dosage. Chloroxygen has been the most powerful brand for me. I take 50mg in the morning (one pill) and one at night, and that does the trick - but I've tried other brands with the same dosage, and haven't been so successful. It's derived from English Stinging Nettle, and some use other ingredients, such as Alfalfa. Perhaps Nettle is stronger than Alfalfa, even though it's the same dose. I'm not certain. Give your brand a try, and if it doesn't work as well, you can try taking up to 200mg a day without problems, apparently. Just whatever happens, don't give up. I have even more solutions to choose from on my More Solutions page. Best of luck, kitten!

    1. Oh honey, your post just broke my heart. I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this. Honestly, I have a few theories about why doctors don't know anything about this condition. It's caused by so many things, and doctors like gynecologists don't specialize in any of those causes except for when the issue is caused by an infection - although most of the time, that's not the case. It's a matter of sweat/apocrine glands and how our hormones, foods, fabrics we wear, illnesses we've had, medications we've taken, etc. affect them. I also have a theory that most illnesses (especially female illnesses) that can't easily be treated with a prescription pill aren't much a concern to the medical industry - but that's beside that's a topic for another day. Let's talk about what you can do right now.
Something to consider is that Chlorella, although similar sounding to Chlorophyll is actually something different. Chlorella is a green algae and Chlorophyll is a nutrient rich pigment in all green plans that allows them to turn sunlight into energy - Although Chlorella contains Chlorophyll, they are different substances, so I’m not sure if Chlorella alone is as effective at treating this condition as straight chlorophyll. If the Chlorella isn’t helping you, I would suggest finding a brand of just Chlorophyll and seeing if that does the trick. But in the mean time, something hat will help you is actually, simply deodorant. I’m not sure what brands you’ll find in Sweden, but if you have a brand similar to this one called Lavalin, I think it would take care of the onion issue on your breasts:

      http://www.luckyvitamin.com/p-548401-hlavin-lavilin-bio-balance-72-hour-roll-on-deodorant-21-oz?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=fpl&utm_term=HlavinLavilinBioBalance72HourRollOnDeodorant21oz&utm_content=132212&utm_campaign=googlebase&site=google_base&scid=scplp6957379&gclid=CMv719-Li8YCFVgYHwodXp0Aww

You can also use it on your vagina too (not according to the manufacturer - I've just used it myself). It’s something you apply only every 3 days, so if you’re planning a romantic evening with your boyfriend, just make sure its one of the nights that you don’t apply it ;)

Please also take a look at my “More Solutions” page. There are LOTS of solutions there that I’ve read about, or that were suggested to me by other readers.

Maby I can order from the States? Ebay? Can you please write what your Chlorophyll is called, what is the brand? Is it fluid or is it pills? If I know what its called maby I can order it from your country. I will try the Chlorella powder a few Days more and see. I will write to you again very soon. Have a nice day sweety <3

    3. No worries, honey. The brand of Chlorophyll that I use is called Chloroxegen. I use the 50MG pills. Here it is on Ebay:

      http://www.ebay.com/itm/Herbs-Etc-ChlorOxygen-Chlorophyll-Concentrate-Alcohol-Free-60-Softgels/301632951074?_trksid=p2047675.c100011.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140602152332%26meid%3D8fa98747ca534744ae5f31aa3c5363dd%26pid%3D100011%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D290956415242

And yes - take the Chlorella a few more days and see. Perhaps try taking it not only in the morning and at night, but also in the afternoon. Just see what happens. Also, If you can’t find that exact brand of deodorant, try any natural deodorant. And again, don’t forget to check my More Solutions page! I wish you the very best of luck! :)

  27. Hey guys (ladies)! I have recently had the onion smell but I also have recently been checked and no sign of anything. I also experience clear discharge sometimes it's white usually after sex. Its really embarrassing. I just wondering how do y'all deal with and hide it. Also I have recently had the birth control implant removed and I started working out and eating healthy. I have lost 10lbs but I wasn't expecting this in return.

    1. Hi hon! Well, fluctuations in hormones can cause the onion odor, so perhaps going off your birth control altered your hormones and caused the odor. By no means does it means there is anything wrong with your hormone levels, it simply means that they're effecting your apocrine glands differently than before. I would give Chlorophyll a try, and see if it helps with your issue. In terms of any clear or white discharge after sex, that's completely normal. If your sex is unprotected, your vagina is simply cleaning itself. You can always wear a liner the next day. Unfortunately, It's something that your body has to do in order for you to stay infection free.

  28. Hi there! First of all THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I havent begun treatment yet but I am so grateful that I am not alone. Knowing that makes a world of difference already. I have a weird question about the Certain Dri - Does it taste bad? If I use it often is it something my boyfriend will taste on my nipples and down there? I am still going to use it, I just wanted to be prepared for the reaction... LOL. Again thank you so much for making this available! <3

    1. Hi hon!
Well, I wouldn't say Certain Dri tastes good - that's for sure ;) But it's a 72 hour deodorant, so you only apply it every 3 days after applying it every day for a week. When I was using it, I wouldn't apply it on days that I was seeing my boyfriend, and that worked for me. You may also want to try Lavalin instead of Certain Dri if it seems too intense. It's a more natural, long lasting deodorant with less abrasive chemicals. It works the same. You apply it every 3 days. But also, for sure, try taking Chlorophyll - in fact, try that before using deodorant. It's a much healthier solution, and you may discover you don't need the deodorant at all after taking it twice a day. Certain Dri and Lavalin are more like "last resort" options. Just a tip ;) Best of luck, lady!

  29. Hi!
I´m so glad i found your blog. I have this problem and i thought it was normal at some point.
I will have a healthier diet without much onions and garlic and lots of water. Also, i´ll buy the chlorophyll pilss today. I´ll take one per day and i´d like to tell you how it goes. Can i do that? I´ve never talked about this to anyone cause it´s so embarrasing i feel like crying. I take good care of my hygene and i feel now so ashamed.

    Have a nice day!

    1. Aw honey. No reason to feel ashamed. There are SO MANY girls just like you with this issue, so please don't feel that way. Simply look at your situation as a puzzle that just needs solving, and you'll find lots of solutions to the puzzle here. I would actually suggest taking 2 Chlorophyll pills a day instead of just 1, as I haven't heard of one girl who has been successful with taking it only once a day. You may be wasting the pills - however, if you want to give it a try, see what happens, and let me know :)

    2. Thank you very much! I couldn´t find the pills but i found liquid Chlorophyll and i´ve been drinking 3 little cups with water per day. I just started a few days ago so i´ll let you know what happens in a week or so.

Thank you again for your words and support. :)

  30. It's dairy.I have been suffering since I was a teenager too, tried it all nothing helped. But recently I started a new diet and a part of it is to cut out dairy to reduce belly bloat. So I did the next day I noticed I smelled but not as bad then the following day nothing I was like a normal woman. It went that way for a week till I cheated ( it's hard not to eat cheese). The very next day the smell was back.So that was all the study I needed its been two weeks no smell even close to my period and when I'm aroused. I'm willing to give up cheese to smell good.(its reeeaaaallly hard though)

    1. I wish that was all there was to the cause with me. I had gone completely vegan for a month, and sadly, it had no effect. Glad you found your trigger, though. Although, I'd be interested to know if you would still have the odor if you were eating dairy while taking chlorophyll. Something worth a try if you're appetite for cheese gets the better of you ;) Thank you for your input!

  31. Does this happen with garlic too??? I've noticed a garlic-like small recently. I cut up onions and garlic every time I cook ANYTHING!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't heard that cutting garlic causes vaginal odors, but it's possible. If cutting onions can cause it, I can't see why cutting garlic wouldn't. They're both in the allium family of vegetables, so their chemical makeup is actually quite similar.

  32. I'm going to try the chlorophyll, just because it sounds like it might work in more than one way, but I do want to recommend vagisil PH balance. Using chemicals in or around your vaginal area is a bad idea, because it throws off your PH, and subsequently the ecosystem that keeps your vagina healthy. Vagisil PH Balance is made specifically not to do this and has worked for me to keep things fairly fresh. All though, I did cut an onion the other day and it didn't help with that. Took two days to make is go away.

  33. I've had really bad onion odor coming from my nipples as well as my arm pits for quite sometime now. It's become a real big issue this past year, and my boyfriend complains about it every time we're intimate. I don't eat too much garlic or onions so I don't understand what the source of this terrible odor is!

But! I really want to try the chlorophyll pills. Does anyone know if it is safe to take while on birth control pills? Does it make the pill any less effective?

  34. Hi out there. Thanks for creating this article it is comforting to find so many other women out there with this issue. For me it is two triggers one is eating onions/garlic and the other is hormonal. I have cut out fresh onions and garlic from my diet and can tell a huge difference. Don't give up

  35. Omg! I'm back again! So I took the chloroxgen liquid last year and didn't get relief. I just kind of kept things really clean down there but the smell never really goes away! So know I'm sexually active and the other day I tasted it on his fingers and it was so bad like battery acid I had to immediately brush my teeth and it still kind of lingered! Sighs! I don't even want him going down on me because of that taste! I'm going to try some of the other solutions before we have sex again. Awful!

  36. Hi there. I think I can help. I have done a lot a lot of research since the smell has had an extremely negative impact on my life. For me it was a bacterial imbalance (which I think is what it is for most people), specifically Staph Hominis (known for their oniony smell) which override the non-odorous strains of Staph we have naturally on our skin.
I recommend visiting Dr. Armpit's website.
The only thing that I have found to help is the topical application of Apple Cider Vinegar followed by yogurt or kefir. The ACV is slightly acidic to kill the bacteria and the yogurt replenishes with healthy probiotics. Remember, you want to rebalance.
But it may not work upon first application, so do this for 1-2 weeks to move the bacterial communities in the desirable way.
This eliminated the onion smell in my crotch area, but I am still struggling with my armpits because the Staph hominis have become a part of my natural bacterial flora since it's been over 2 years. Deal with this problem as soon as you get a whiff. Don't wait.
Hope you try this and it helps you like it did me.

    Replies
    1. Interesting! I'll add Staph Hominis to this page! It's true, it appears that a bacterial imbalances tend to be a common cause for this condition. For some girls, it's bacterial vaginosis, and treating that condition treats the odor, but for others, it's everything from hormonal imbalances, to a lack of zinc, to a symptom that comes from eating onions or garlic... but I haven't heard of this yet, so I'm very grateful. Thank you, hon!

      Delete
  37. Yep, no problem(: It's also important to note that your crotch area and the armpit have the SAME sweat glands and bacteria that love the sweat.
    http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/2015/04/02/biochemical-breakthrough-explains-body-odor/
    http://boholisticmom.com/main/bohemian-style/get-rid-of-body-odor
These are also two good sites you should definitely check out.
Also: coffee and alcohol, which you listed on the causes list, are actually only partial causes. The real cause is the bacteria. This is because caffeine stimulates the sweat production. More sweat... More bacteria eat that sweat.. more waste.. more smell.
So the ROOT CAUSE is the bacteria.
Please try the ACV and yogurt/kefir and don't go diagnosing yourself with crazy diseases or spending 40$ on deodorant (I did, and I completely regret all this wasted money !).
Nobody deserves to go through this smelly problem! It's horrible. I really hope this can help someone. It's messy but it works and once you rebalance the bacteria, you will NEVER have this problem again. The good bacteria will keep the bad in check.

  38. Lately I carry around some witch hazel in a bottle & wipe my armpits & groin with that. You can also add a few drops of lemon oil or mix with that Weleda lemon deo spray. They also make witch hazel wipes & it's the main ingredient in those hemmorrhoid wipes if that's easier for you to carry to help wipe some bacteria away. My friend also suggested lemon juice & salt to rinse to rid armpit odor. So I'm guessing you could use that too in groin or nipples but avoid delicate inner areas. Also after showers I'll put Capriclear (clear coconut oil unscented spray on my skin).

I think mine is related to stress, elevated androgens (higher testosterone) & definitely hormone component. I'm on progestin & noticed it's more frequent. It actually is a blend of onion & weed smell? I know that sounds weird.

I've tried stinging nettles, saw palmetto, pumpkin oil to try to block the androgens, but I don't notice much help from that really.

The Chlorophyll tabs I agree are the best. If you have the hormone component or PCOS also try the aldactone to block the testosterone & you may notice & decrease in scent.

In the past I've used a deodorant cream from a company called NOW. It's a bit thick,so try mixing in some shea butter to have it go on smoother. A tiny bit & blend in hands & put in the folds legs outer parts (I find the odor is on the skin where the hair is for me personally). It has chamomile & other natural ingredients.

Zinc hasn't seem to help me & simply makes me nauseous. I wonder if using zinc cream would work? Not zinc oxide, but something like liquid zinc or even colloidal silver too?

I ingested colloidal silver & did not see any improvement, but it may be an option.

I avoid meat, eggs, onion, garlic & fish. Shellfish is usually okay. sometimes wheat/gluten products give me issues. So pay attention to what you eat & how it may come out. I too have used the chlorophyll. I've used 200mg sometimes up to twice a day.

I notice if I avoid red meat it's easier to control.

Lavilin did not work for me personally on armpit or groin.

Now deodorant cream works on groin, but not on my armpits. It's really strange. I think maybe different bacteria.

probiotics & Candex to balance the flora seems to help only a little for me personally, but give that a try.

Again sometimes stress is the main culprit for me. Heat & summer make it worse too. I cannot wear synthetic fabrics undies. I usually wear cotton.

  39. You may want to try magnesium supplements & That Naked Naturals deodorant (arrowroot, baking soda, coconut oil, carnauba was). It's kinda expensive at whole foods, but works well for armpits. You may have to re-apply during the day. Rub it in well & only a little. if you use to much & then sweat you'll get a little white lines possibly & just wipe away with tissue.

  40. I like Chloroxygen drops in water/mint flavor & use some stevia if you need to. Mega Chlorophyll caps by World Organic. Also Sage water/tea & mint are supposed to help with excess sweating & help with body scents. Sage upsets my stomach, so I don't eat or drink it. Weleda makes a natural Sage deo spray. it has a strong smell so maybe cut it with lemon? I know these other ideas are unconventional but also look into drinking Shungite water (drop a few rocks in water). I'm going to experiment & make a Shungite, baking soda, lemon juice rinse in shower. I drink the water & don't notice anything, but I want to see if it has any topical /skin effects.

Maybe taking liquid silica drops by NOW in your water/juice. Commonly supplements of horsetail caps also have silica (but I notice for me personally, horsetail,it feels slightly stimulating like caffeine. I researched it & possibly the ) so I use drops. Herbal teas like organic roasted dandelion root to flush liver & Hibiscus flower too. Aloe vera caps? milk thistle to support liver (liver & kidneys help flush toxins). I know bacteria feed off things that come out of the oily glands, but maybe some supplements will flush the body & help overall? Wiping areas with Hydrogen peroxide helps a little.

Also maybe Goldenseal capsules or mixing it into shea butter or coconut oil & apply or put in water & rinse skin. With any of these supplements research & check with docs to make sure they don't conflict & also certain supplements may have vitamin K so for folks with clotting issues-avoid & ask docs. For example Kale & greens are good, but have higher vit K than other veggies, so if you're on anticoagulants you need to be careful. Also certain veggies may interfere with Thyroid hormones, so again be mindful & research. Greens & their chlorophyll may help, but certain greens like Kale may affect thyroid, etc.

    1. Hello Sweetheart. First of all, no worries. It sounds like you're already doing the smartest thing which is noting the changes in your diet. Yogurt contains probiotics (which help control over-growths of yeast and bacteria) and beans can effect body odor, bloating and gas. It's tricky to tell exactly why you're experiencing this odor because it can be caused by so many factors, but since you've already noted those changes in your diet - try adding yogurt back and cutting out beans first. If the odor continues, consider a few more things. Is the odor accompanied by a discharge or itchiness or burning? If so, you're going to want to take a trip to the doctor because you may have an easily treatable infection. If not, you may want to take a trip regardless, if you add back yogurt and beans and the odor persists. Just to be sure it's not an infection... then - if you have no infection, and you've returned your diet to the way it was before, take a look at my pages about Solutions, and give them a try. There are lots and lots of them on this website, so don't fret. Best of luck to you, hon!

  43. Has anyone been treated for vulvar dermatitis ? Or noticed symptoms consistent with lack of estrogen ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually yes. I, myself have been treated for vestibulitis, which is not exactly dermatitis but it's triggered by dyes and chemicals like dermatitis. I've also had my vestibulitis doctor request that my gynecologist up the estrogen in my birth control because my estrogen might be too low. So yup!

      Delete
    2. Did that seem to help curing you ? Or has chlorophyll only been the thing to help? Also have you tried a gluten free diet ?

      Delete
    3. Unfortunately, it hasn't cured me, or controlled the onion odor. The daily Chlorophyl has only controlled my odor issue, but doesn't have any effect on my vestibular symptoms. However, interestingly enough, I have recently tested positive for SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) which causes both inflammation in other parts of the body and can upset your body's ability to absorb nutrients, so it may be connected to both my odor and vestibulitis. If you experience IBS, as well as both vestibular pain issues and odor, it might be worth looking into.

    1. I've heard of this, but it just seems like such a dangerous procedure for something that can be easily treated with a healthy supplement, like Chlorophyl or Magnesium (depending on your cause). I'd always attempt safe, healthy treatments before expensive, potentially dangerous ones, but that's just me.

  45. First off... Thank God I found this lol! I'm so over being told I smell like a cheesesteak with extra onions after I work out lol!! So can't wait to try some of these supplements. But that being said have you come across any women with Hypothyroidism on this blog? I only ask because as anxious as I am to start taking chlorophyll I'm also wondering if it is safe for me to use with having hypothyroidism and taking thyroid medicine?? Maybe not just the chlorophyll either, any of the supplements really. Having an under active thyroid is a pain in the butt and sometimes certain things that people take and thrive with have complete opposite reactions for the old hypothyroid sufferer (just another fun added bonus *NOT!) so I was just curious if this question has ever been brought up? Thanks so much for all of this. It's so nice to know I'm not a freak.

    1. Unfortunately, I don't know much about Chlorophyll and how it interacts with Hypothyroid medications. Best of luck, sweetheart!

  46. So I have been dealing with this issue for about 20 years now (musty acidic vaGina and nipples) and I have tried most of the solutions to no avail until recently I tried the following in conjunction with the chlorophyll....Hope it helps someone

Topical treatment of nipples, arm pits and vagina (must include inner thighs, inner lips and perrenia area includingredients outside of anus)
1.Mixture of Baking soda and Pure Lemon Juicemail
Use this everyday initially on affected areas. Rub thin film and let it sit for about 3 to 5 minutes before proceeding with normal bath. This can be done twice daily

    2. Evening
After Baking Soda and Lemon wash has been rinsed take cotton ball soaked in ACV and clean all areas listed above. Let it dry. Next rub Plain unsweetened Greek yogurt as cream all over areas, allow to dry overnight. Repeat this step 7 to 14 days consecutively. This process kills the bad bacteria on the surface of the skin and helps to repopulate the area with good bacteria long term.

    3. In addition to taking the chlorophyll pills twice daily I have added 8 Oz of Kombucha tea each day as my probiotics in the am or afternoon and about 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda mixed in a glass of water in the evening. This really did the trick for me by balancing my PHD levels (alkalizing) my body.

    4. The final step that has changed my life was using a baking soda and tea tree oil mixture as a douche. This also helped to tame my PHD and reduced the musty/battery acid taste, smell and sensation.

The combination of all these products also made the skin in those areas smooth and soft, removed any odor, and I just feel fresh. Even my breath has improved.

  47. I have been struggling with vaginal odor that smells like onions for 15 years! I’ve tried most of the things on your list. I even read through your blog to get a few new ideas about a year ago when I was desperate for a solution.

I’ve finally found one that works for me! It was information on your site that lead me to the solution, your comments about Candida and leaky gut. My solution is 2 products, a very specific probiotoc called ProBio5, which has an antifungal to kill the Candida as well as 5 different flora to help balance the chemistry, the other is a cleansing product called BioCleanse, which helps flush your body of the dead toxins! If you don’t flush them they will get reabsorbed! Both products are from a health and wellness company called Plexus.

Yall it has been a godsend! I take 3 ProBio and 2 Biocleanse every night for the last 8 months, and I don’t have the odor anymore! Not for the last 5 months, and not even after I work out!! I’ve been so floored by the success that I’ve become a company rep. Happy to chat/share more information if you’d like.

Regardless, definitely give chlorophyll a try since that helps me, whether I have only the taste and no smell. If that doesn't work for you, take a look at my solutions pages and give another solution a try.
